Make a difference in the Austin community today! Join Austin Partners in Education as it expands its College Readiness program to serve 100 rising 9th grade students in the summer of 2017. The program will offer personalized academic support to students needing preparation to meet state mandated academic college readiness standards in English Language Arts. Students that meet the standards can qualify for a variety of dual-credit education opportunities.
Job Description:
VISTA Summer Associates will perform a dual role, in both direct service and capacity building. The primary purpose of the VISTA Summer Associate position is to prepare students to meet the college readiness standards for reading and writing, as per the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). VISTAs will also contribute to the development of future program curricula and training. Each VISTA Summer Associate will provide 20 to 30 hours weekly of academic tutoring/mentoring to a group of approximately 10 rising 9th grade students, with a focus on reading and writing instruction aligned with the TSI. Additionally, the VISTA Summer Associates will work outside of the classroom with APIE’s College Readiness Program team to develop and revise College Readiness curriculum/training materials used to prepare underclassmen for the TSI assessment.
VISTA Duties:

· Lead individual and small-group tutoring sessions as assigned at AISD high schools

· Create and adapt lesson plans to accommodate various learning styles and student needs

· Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure successful student outcomes

· Create and foster effective one-on-one relationships with students to ensure program participation and encourage a college going culture

· Establish, maintain, and utilize partnerships with on-campus contacts

· Provide feedback in improving program curriculum and communication strategies with students

· Collaborate with program supervisors and other program staff in expanding curriculum content

· Assist program supervisors with improving training for College Readiness Program staff

VISTAs Receive:

· Extensive initial and ongoing training with the College Readiness team

· In-class support from trained College Readiness Advocates

· Living allowance: Approximately $2, 284.62 for 10 weeks of service

· End of Service Stipend: Approximately $250 or Segal AmeriCorps Education Award $1,222

Requirements: 60 credit hours in Education or related field (Bachelor’s degree preferred), Good organizational skills and flexibility a must; Strong communication skills; verbal and written; Ability to thrive both in a collaborative environment and in situations with minimal supervision; Candidate will exhibit strong initiative and must be able to adapt quickly; Candidate will exhibit strong tenacity in challenging situations; Must be positive, personable, and able to relate well to diverse populations, with a particular emphasis on working with young people ages 14-18; Proficiency in Microsoft office software applications and Outlook; Bilingual in Spanish a plus
